Where Does Your Chocolate Come From?

For these bars, we chose to work with Republica de Cacao (RDC), a purveyor of sustainable cacao that supports small family farmers in Ecuador. As a certified B Corp., Republica de Cacao’s ethical business practices have been verified, and their ingredients can be traced back to the farm or region that produces the milk, sugar and cacao that ends up in your edible!

Our Satori Singles 55% dark chocolate has a subtle taste with toasty notes and soft spices, made from fine flavor “Nacional” cacao from Ecuador. The cacao selected for Satori Singles Dark Chocolate bars originates from a selection of fine Cacao Arriba beans from the cities of Quininde and Borbon, in the region of Esmeraldas, Ecuador.

For our creamy Milk Chocolate, we source cacao from a selection of small farms in Piura and San Martin, Peru. The milk itself comes from dairy cows in the provinces of Azuay, Canar, Chimborazo and Morona Santiago in Ecuador, while the sugar is cultivated on a selection of small farms on the coastal plains of Guachené, Cauca, Colombia.

We care about where our chocolate comes from, and Republica de Cacao develops the most authentic Latin American chocolate hand-in-hand with local communities, developing sustainable fine cacao production at its source. How Does Satori Make Fast-Acting Edibles?

After arriving in the United States, the culinary team at CannaCraft blends the RDC chocolate with pure cannabis oil to create a precisely dosed confection with 10 milligrams of THC per package. In order to cut down on the onset time of cannabinoids, CannaCraft uses VESIsorb®, a nano-emulsifier with a safe track record of use in the vitamin and supplement industries.

VESIsorb® is “a naturally self-assembling colloidal droplet delivery system that has been clinically proven to increase absorption of nutritional supplements, food and beverage, and cosmetic ingredients.” It’s commonly used in the vitamin and supplement business to increase bioavailability of substances including omega-3 EFAs, coenzyme Q10, vitamin K2, curcumin, phytocannabinoids, vitamin D, krill oil, algal DHA, vitamin A and beta-caryophyllene.

Here at CannaCraft, we believe in being transparent about our ingredients while also remaining on the cutting edge of cannabinoid science. Matt Elmes is our Director of New Product Development, and he comes equipped with a Ph.D. in Molecular and Cellular Biology. In his opinion, VESIsorb® is the best option for increasing cannabinoid bioavailability because its efficacy is backed up with clinical research.

VESIsorb® has previously been established as an effective way of increasing bioavailability of lipophilic vitamins such as CoQ10, and these exciting findings were recently extended to phytocannabinoids! Last year a randomized, double-blinded clinical trial was published comparing the relative uptake and bioavailability of CBD formulated with VESIsorb® compared to traditional oil-solubilized edibles. These researchers found HUGE increases in how much CBD these patients were able to absorb into their bodies. They also found that the CBD was absorbed at a significantly faster rate compared to standard edible formulations. It really works!

How does VESIsorb® improve the absorption and bioavailability of phytocannabinoids?

Basically, VESIsorb® mimics the body’s natural methods of emulsification, which happen in our gastrointestinal tract, enabling humans to fully absorb nutrients and break down foodstuffs. Phytocannabinoids (like THC and CBD) found within the cannabis plant mix well with fats, but not water, so they require emulsification to be efficiently absorbed after ingestion. This process makes nutrients more “bioavailable” to our bodies. Phytocannabinoids are not naturally water-soluble and exhibit poor bioavailability on their own, so much of their content is not absorbed at all during digestion, and the effects of THC and CBD aren’t utilized efficiently in our bodies.

Once cannabinoids that are formulated with VESIsorb® hit your saliva and stomach juices, it spontaneously emulsifies into millions of microscopic ‘bubbles’ of emulsion droplets. The cannabinoids reside inside these tiny lipid droplets and they ‘trick’ your body into eagerly absorbing as much as possible, as quickly as possible.  

What is VESIsorb® made from?

The ingredients of the “VESIsorb® Colloidal Droplet Delivery System” include medium chain triglycerides, non-ionic surfactant, polyglycerol esters of fatty acids, and natural flavors. While some of these ingredients might sound unfamiliar and therefore frightening, there’s really nothing to be worried about.
Medium chain triglycerides (MCT) are a natural product that makes up part of coconut oil. "Surfactant" stands for "surface active agent,” a compound that lowers surface tension, and stabilizes the mixture. Nonionic surfactants are molecules with no electrical charge. An emulsifier, polyglycerol esters of fatty acids (PGEs) are frequently used in food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries on account of their amphiphilic properties.
